The following is unconfirmed family lore.
George James Bumpus was raised by a ˝ breed uncle James Bumpus who owned a tavern in OK after his parents were drowned in a KA flood in 1878. His sister was raised by a KA farmer. (The tavern could have been in OK, AR, MO or KA.
There was a Rubin James or James Rubin Bumpus in Holt Co. MO. during the right time whose descendents claim he moved to MO. with a brother from OH. or IL. about the right time.
There was a Reubin Bumpus in Richland Co. OH. t the time Samuel was born.. I’m currently working on this.
We know that Samuel Bumpus died in 1885.)
George James Bumpus was said to have been told by Samuel, his father that he was related to the James brothers and that he remembered an uncle Jesse who only visited at night.
( A lot of people in MO claimed to be related to Jesse James at one time.)
Samuel Bumpus traveled to the CO. gold fields with his son, George James. (Other family members could have gone with them. There were some Lattin family members in CO. about the same time. This information is from Sue Lattin.)
“Clara Amanda Bumpus committed suicide as a teen-age prostitute.” ( I possess a photo post card with Clara Amanda and her husband, Ellwood Baker sent from Fresno CA. to brother George James Bumpus in Seattle WA., dated 1917, that tends to dispel the suicide theory.
Clara referred to it as an old photo. In the photo Clara appears to be in her 40’s and Ellwood much older.)
Samuel Bumpus: Records indicate that Samuel Bumpus arrived in Carthage, Jasper Co., MO in 1868 or 69,
Married Catherine Issabella Lattin in 1869 and in the 1870 census they lived next door to Dimmick Lattin, 70, his wife Cyrenia, 55 and children George and Mary.
George James was born later that year.
In the 1880 census, Samuel was living on the Jasper Co. poor farm and was listed as 38 out of work for 6 mo., house carpenter, widowed, birth place OH,
father born NY, mother b.
CT. This corresponds with the 1870 census. He married Amanda Ballanger in 1881.
A death certificate indicates Samuel died in Web City, Jasper Co, MO. in Aug. of 1885 of “cerebral congestion and laryngitis”, whatever that is, father born NY, mother born PA.
That same month Amanda Bumpus was re-admitted to the poor farm and stayed there until Oct. 1894 when she “went to live with Mr.Estes”.
